Exciting News from JCMP

At Create Birmingham, we believe that the creative sector has a key role to play in our community’s continued struggle for social justice, and we encourage you to learn more about the Jefferson County Memorial Project’s work and get involved!
Since the Jefferson County Memorial Project was first formed in 2018, Create Birmingham has been a proud community partner of this grassroots coalition. JCMP works to help the citizens of Jefferson County confront past and present racial injustice and violence, promoting change through research, education, advocacy and memorialization.

After two years of serving as the newly launched project’s fiscal sponsor, we are so pleased to announce that JCMP will continue its phenomenal growth in its new and permanent programmatic home at Greater Birmingham Ministries. As a multi-racial, multi-faith organization, GBM has worked for more than fifty years to build a supportive and engaged community and a more just society for all people.

Create is honored to have played a role in establishing the project, and we will continue our commitment on multiple fronts, with Create’s Director of Development Meg Nelson continuing her role as a member of JCMP’s Core coalition and the organizer of JCMP’s Community Arts committee.

We are also happy to share the news that JCMP has hired Joi Brown as its new director! Joi has been a dedicated member of JCMP’s Core since day one, bringing her talents and expertise to the team in her position as Marketing Manager at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. She starts her new position in early September and succeeds Abigail Schneider, who will depart to become the Director of Partnerships for BhamStrong, while remaining on the Core coalition.
