“Joe Minter is Here” is an art exhibition nearly 40 years in the making.

In 1988, Titusville native Joe Minter began creating sculptures in his backyard using scrap metal and found material. Since then, he’s expanded the exhibit with an array of sculptures, totems, monuments, signs and more with themes surrounding African-American history, particularly in Birmingham.

The exhibit is known as Joe Minter’s African Village in America.

While Joe Minter’s work has been featured in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Birmingham Museum of Art—but never in an exhibit focused solely on his work.

Until now.

Produced by 1504 and presented by Create Birmingham in partnership with Navigate Affordable Housing Partners, “Joe Minter is Here” is a new community-based art installation of never-before-exhibited work. The exhibit features Minter’s sculptures alongside new audio and film components created by 1504.

Check out the “Joe Minter is Here” exhibit before Oct. 20
