Moms are Essential

This year especially, we acknowledge our gratitude to all the creative moms who are juggling the roles of teachers, parents, daughters, partners, sisters, friends, business owners, and community contributors.

For nearly two months now, like mothers everywhere, the moms at Create Birmingham have been researching resources, learning new ways of working, and strategizing to support our community in these challenging and surreal circumstances.

We’ve been carving out moments late at night to chip away at the work we believe in, waking up early to teach our children (or at least attempt to teach them), cleaning up slime, inventing games, and listening to cartoons playing in the background during Zoom meetings.

We’ve felt frustrated about not meeting our own expectations for productivity and felt guilty about splitting time between the children in need of our attention and the looming deadlines that have to be met. We miss seeing each other in the office and being inspired by the perspectives we each bring to the table.

But we are incredibly thankful. We are a team — not just colleagues, but also friends who care about each other. And we are supported by a leader who recognizes our individual styles and skills and has given us the grace and space to do our best in these trying times.

So on this Mother’s Day we have a special man to thank — our Buddy (and yours). It’s been said that behind every great man is a great woman. Well, behind the four of us is a great man who understands that mothers are essential. We love you, Buddy Palmer. Thank you for keeping us together and pushing us forward.

This year especially, we acknowledge our gratitude to all the creative moms who are juggling the roles of teachers, parents, daughters, partners, sisters, friends, business owners, and community contributors.

Happy Mother’s Day.
