Create Birmingham, in partnership with the City of Birmingham, invites local artists to submit qualifications for a public art project in the Smithfield neighborhood that will activate the intersection of 8th Avenue West and Center Street.
“I know the impact [public art] has on a community when you create art in spaces where people wouldn’t typically hang out. Art making in community spaces encourages people’s senses.”
“In my opinion, that’s what public art should be about. It should be something that a community can participate in, have ownership of and be excited about because it belongs to everyone.”
“Someday, we want kids that have grown up in schools with underfunded arts programs (or having been told to muffle their creative aspirations) to be able to look around and see reflections of themselves on the walls of Birmingham. We want them to be able to proudly say, ‘This is MY city.'”
