Create Birmingham, in partnership with the City of Birmingham, is pleased to announce that Lydia Walker has been selected as the local artist partner for Birmingham’s 2022 Asphalt Art Initiative.
"When I moved to the States to live with my dad, art connected us. He drew every day, and I began to draw with him. It was a way for us to bond after all this time apart."
"My inspiration comes from listening to music, being a part of a support group, and volunteering. I try to be present in the moment, to focus on my craft, and allow inspiration came and go."
Erica Chisolm is a fine artist and muralist who has a vision of bringing art, beauty, and inspiration to pedestrians in Black communities -- highlighting surrounding businesses, encouraging walkability, and adding value to the neighborhoods Erica describes as "culture-rich and art poor." With a mission to help others realize their opportunity to dream, the Urban Impact fellow and National Black Arts Festival award recipient is painting her way through Birmingham's historic Fourth Avenue Business District.…
“Someday, we want kids that have grown up in schools with underfunded arts programs (or having been told to muffle their creative aspirations) to be able to look around and see reflections of themselves on the walls of Birmingham. We want them to be able to proudly say, ‘This is MY city.'”
