Vocabby’s World is a community vocabulary program in partnership with ArtPlay and sponsored by PNC Foundation. The adventures of Vocabby take pre-K children on travels around the world as they learn vocabulary words through science and arts concepts. Through this partnership, ArtPlay is providing hands-on activities that reach families in our communities and across the country. Free books, curriculum and art materials reinforce the new vocabulary learned.

[more+]Ground Floor Contemporary is thrilled to present Flashlight, an exhibition of new works by Misty Bennett, Renee Hanan Plata, and Rebecca Tully Fulmer.
Misty Bennett is a painter and educator whose abstract paintings use playful color choices and thick, impasto paint, contrasted with delicate line work and ethereal spray paint. These images serve as metaphor for our emotional states of being, while the materials of the painting itself ground the viewer in its physical, sensory presence. Bennett teaches at the University of Montevallo and serves as Chair of the Department of Art. She holds a BFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design and an MFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of Georgia. Her work has been exhibited across the southeast, most recently in the Alabama State Council for the Arts Gallery in Montgomery, the Red Clay Survey at the Huntsville Museum of Art, and the Tennessee Valley Art Museum.
Renee Hanan Plata is a painter and sculptor who uses the repetition of single units to explore the illusion of space and color. She challenges the viewer not to size up the painting at first glance but to allow the painting to reveal itself over time. Hanan Plata maintains an active studio in Birmingham, Alabama and recent exhibitions include a solo show at Scott Miller Projects and group exhibitions at Space One Eleven and the Alabama School of Fine Arts. She lived and worked in NYC for twenty years and in 1976, was awarded Yale University’s Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship. Hanan Plata received her BFA from Atlanta College of Art, MFA from Tyler School of Art, and MSEd from Bankstreet College.
Rebecca Tully Fulmer is a visual artist based in Birmingham, Alabama, whose interdisciplinary practice fuses lens-based media, collage, and fiber processes. Her studio work primarily focuses on how an image functions when it departs from the specific and becomes merely a material for exploration and expression. Inviting the viewer to sit inside each piece through transparent and reflective media, the experience creates a dialectical process with the eye as the shift and shimmer of light becomes a collaborator in the work. Tully Fulmer graduated with an MFA from Lesley University Art + Design in Boston, Massachusetts, and a BA in Interior Design from Auburn University's School of Architecture. Light in Tandem, her recent solo exhibition, was held at the Gadsden Museum of Art in Gadsden, Alabama.

[more+]Eddie 9V has powered up. From the day he first slung a guitar on a local stage, the Georgia-born bandleader announced himself as an artist to watch. But in the last few meteoric years, Eddie?s music has crossed oceans and airwaves, transcending his cult-hero status to become a beacon for fans of real music everywhere. ?Eddie 9V is something else,? wrote the UK?s Classic Rock of 2022?s chart-topping Capricorn. ?A man who genuinely inhabits golden-era American roots, playing the most instinctive blues you?ll hear all year.? You?ll find the proof on new studio album ?Saratoga?, releasing November 22, 2024 on the fabled Ruf label. It?s a record that will thrill both newcomers and fans who have trailed Eddie since the start, showcasing his fresh, fiery spin on Southern soul, blues, rock and funk, with his signature wit and sharp observations of modern America placing him squarely in the here-and-now. ?I do think it?s a wonderful road trip album," he nods of the eleven originals co-written with his brother, the much-respected Southern musician, Lane Kelly. ?I was shooting for a more Americana-type album this time, less blues songs and solos and more focusing on the songwriting.? The new songs of ?Saratoga? deserve nothing less than your full attention. Eddie?s latest album announces his new groove with the crisp, purposeful beats of the opening title track, an instant favorite that gets under your skin with its almost disco-style harmonies and joust of horns and slide guitar (?That song is about being in a lonely tiny town that feels impossible to escape?). Halo struts from the speakers on Eddie?s falsetto howl, before the lush yearning of Cry Like A River and Love Moves So Slow (co-written by Spencer Pope) brings vintage soul into the modern age. The brittle riffs and spacey vocal of Delta mark another gearshift, flowing into Red River?s reflective-yet-kinetic groove. Wasp Weather speaks to Eddie?s love of rapid-fire streams of consciousness. ?That?s my favorite lyrically ?cos I like spewing words that don?t make sense into songs. ?I got a big mud house that I can?t keep clean, it?s useless? ? I love that line.? The album plays out in style with the trilling alt-folk of Truckee ? ?We got high and did shrooms and camped on the Truckee river in California,? he explains of the inspiration ? the wistful Tides and Love You All The Way Down. Eddie even slips in a brass-blasting take on Mac DeMarco?s Chamber Of Reflection, before bringing the record home with The Road To Nowhere?s shuddering, tremolo-drenched country lament, his trademark twang utterly transformed into a vintage croon. Eddie 9V is right: this latest album takes us all over the musical and emotional map, while announcing that his recent career peaks are just the start. ?Capricorn was a big jump for us,? he reflects. ?But I?m already writing new songs, y?know?

[more+]I'm Mon, born in Mon Rovia, Liberia. My life can be summed up by being born into a civil war, escaping the life of a child soldier, rescued by the hands of missionaries. Spent a lot of my developmental years living in a variety of places with a number of life experiences. And then layered on top of all of this is the assimilation I felt being a transracially adopted refugee. My music in a nutshell is a culmination of these experiences blended with the empathy I feel for the experiences with others. The mission of my music is to heal with others — with every nation and tongue, in due time.
Mon Rovîa has partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 per ticket goes to supporting Hurricane Helene relief in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of TN. Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to building and improving homes for families in need. As a local affiliate, Habitat for Humanity of Tennessee is actively responding to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. While immediate emergency response is ongoing, Habitat for Humanity's primary role will be in the long-term recovery of disaster-stricken communities.
