[more+]In October, Create Birmingham, in partnership with narrative studio 1504, Navigate Affordable Housing Partners, and sculptor Joe Minter, will produce Joe Minter is Here, a groundbreaking exhibition featuring 20-30 of Mr. Minter’s pieces inside of Titusville’s historic, Marc Steel Building.
This site is significant to Joe Minter’s family history and Birmingham’s industrial history, as well as the lives of other prominent artists in Mr. Minter’s peer group, including artist and musician Lonnie Holley and artist Thornton Dial. The exhibit will be developed collaboratively by 1504 and Mr. Minter, with creative support from curator Matt Arnett and Mr. Holley.
Mr. Minter has lived in the Titusville community for more than fifty years where he has created the sprawling African Village in America on the half-acre property around his home. Part sculpture garden and part memorial, this art environment is filled with sculptures made from scrap metal and found materials. Its theme is recognition of African American history from the first arrivals of captured Africans through slavery to the convict labor system and the Civil Rights Movement to the systemic racism and violence that persists today.
Mr. Minter’s pieces have been in major US exhibitions and are in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Birmingham Museum of Art. While he has been the subject of solo shows elsewhere, Joe Minter is Here will be the first exhibit in Birmingham that focuses solely on his work.
The sculptures will be shown alongside new audio and film components created by 1504 that will contextualize the importance of Mr. Minter’s work. Free public programs will take place throughout the October exhibit.

[more+]Iron Giant Free Association has worked with members of the Birmingham Art Music Alliance to create a group of flexible compositions that reward creative investment from performers and audiences alike. The details of each piece are changeable, so the sounds differ from performance to performance. This is the first concert of a series of programs, with the following compositions receiving their world premiere.
Iron Segments - Michael Coleman
Armature - Monroe Golden / Iron Giant
as reflected in the glimmer of the black pond - Holland Hopson
différance - Mark Lackey
Thus Spoke the Giant - Joseph Landers
Versicles for Aries - Kyle McGucken
Improvisation - LaDonna Smith / Iron Giant
This activity is supported by Alabama State Council on the Arts.
Iron Giant Free Association evolved from Iron Giant Percussion, with the quartet of founders -- Sam Herman, Brett Huffman, Seth Noble, and Justin Wallace -- remaining as core members. Established in 2011 and based in Birmingham (AL), the ensemble has performed alongside artists such as Sō Percussion, Third Coast Percussion, Glenn Kotche of Wilco, and Norman Westberg of Swans. Iron Giant has collaborated with many Alabama music & arts mainstays including the Birmingham Art Music Alliance, Sanspointe Dance Company, John Scalici, and the UAB Percussion Ensemble. Their eclectic vocabulary of chamber music, ambient, noise, and post rock, combined with meditative improvisatory sensibilities makes for a listening experience both cerebral and visceral.
The Birmingham Art Music Alliance (BAMA) is a nonprofit organization with the twofold mission of promoting music by Alabama composers and presenting concerts of recently created art music to communities in Birmingham and beyond. Members include local composers, professional performers, students, and enthusiasts who wish to preserve and maintain the long tradition of music as a living art form.
East Village Arts is a membership based co-operative of artists, musicians and patrons, who believe that diversity and collective creativity is the strength of a healthy community.

Chicklet Forrest, a teenage tomboy, desperately wants to be part of the surf crowd on Malibu Beach in 1962. One thing getting in her way is her unfortunate tendency towards split personalities. Among them is a black check out girl, an elderly radio talk show hostess, a male model named Steve and the accounting firm of Edelman and Edelman. Her most dangerous alter ego is a sexually voracious vixen named Ann Bowman who has nothing less than world domination on her mind.
