The largest work in the show is an eye-catching collaboration among APAEP artists, nationally renowned artist Tameca Cole, and New Orleans-based Brendon Palmer-Angell. The present exhibition marks the unveiling of the mural, which is titled "Can You See You?".
Based at Auburn University, the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project works to create spaces where currently and formerly incarcerated individuals can practice meaningful engagement with the arts and develop their own artistic voices. Founded with the knowledge that creativity is an essential trait of humanity, the program has grown from one poet teaching one class in one facility to hundreds of classes that have reached thousands of students at over 12 facilities. This exhibition is made possible by a grant awarded to the Friends Foundation of BPL by the Alabama State Council on the Arts.

Allen makes most of his wheel-thrown stoneware with a special black clay, but a few terra-cotta pieces are on display as well. Black and red, teal and white, blue and red, and solid black are among the color schemes that adorn the showcased pottery. Allen's newest pieces are characterized by a "cut-out" design that resembles latticework.
“I am moved by Native American and African designs. I use them as a springboard for my designs. The aftermath of 911 gave me the message that I wanted to put in my work. The tragic event was a unifying moment, and so I use the message of the moment in my designs. I call them ‘unity motifs.’ People linked together around the vessel.” For more information about Allen, visit his website.

Explore its endless possibilities while controlling all aspects of what you paint. Practice observation, learn composition and how to represent objects with light and shadow. We will look at the works of Cezanne, Van Gogh, Matisse and several contemporary still life artists. Class will begin with a simple still life and build skills each week. Every class will include a demonstration, followed by students setting up their individual still lifes from objects that are provided or objects brought from home. There will be time to work on your own as well as individual instruction and group critiques for positive suggestions and encouragement.

[more+]Jacob Elkin is a NYC based trombonist who specializes in electronics, spatialization, improvisation, and microtonality. In addition to music from his repertoire, he will present works by Alabama composers.
Michael Coleman's "Sliding Interest #6" is from a series of graphic scores, for sliding instruments, based on interest rate graphs. Both "Meander" by Monroe Golden and "By Wit and Reason, Which We Call Science" by Holland Hopson feature live computer processing. Golden's piece references the meandering path of a Cretan labyrinth and utilizes the natural harmonics of the trombone. Hopson's work is inspired by John Dowland's lute songs of the English Renaissance. William Price's lyrical and virtuosic "Statements" for solo trombone uses different musical styles to delineate the separate movements. A spontaneous performance will pair Elkin with Birmingham's leading improvisor, LaDonna Smith.
This activity is supported by Alabama State Council on the Arts.
Jacob Elkin has performed on some of the most prestigious stages of the world including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and The Kimmel Center. He has presented lecture performances at Mozarteum University Salzburg, the University of London, and The Contemporary Art Center Seoul, South Korea. He has premiered new works for trombone in chamber settings with New York Composers Circle, Mimesis Ensemble, Contemporaneous, Ensemble Mise-en, and The New York Trombone Consort with David Taylor. He has premiered solo works for trombone by Hubert Howe, Dary John Mizelle, Monroe Golden, Joseph Pehrson, Jin-Hee Han, Josh Oxford, and many others. Mr. Elkin has been written about in many publications including Broadway World, OperaWire, New Music USA, I Care if you Listen, Classical Music Daily, and Avant Music News. His music is available on WAW and Ablaze records and has been played on WKCR New York Radio. He is on faculty at The United Nations International School. http://jacobelkin.com
