Book: Opposable Thumbs: How Siskel & Ebert Changed Movies Forever by Matt Singer

In Opposable Thumbs, award-winning editor and film critic Matt Singer eavesdrops on [Siskel and Ebert’s] iconic balcony set, detailing their rise from making a few hundred dollars a week on local Chicago PBS to securing multimillion-dollar contracts for a syndicated series (a move that convinced a young local host named Oprah Winfrey to do the same). Their partnership was cut short when Gene Siskel passed away in February of 1999 after a battle with brain cancer that he’d kept secret from everyone outside his immediate family—including Roger Ebert, who never got to say goodbye to his longtime partner. But their influence on in the way we talk about (and think about) movies continues to this day.

Film: Life Itself (2014) Dir. Steve James

“…[T]his isn’t just about film. It’s about love, compassion, and the acceptance that life eventually comes to a close… Roger once said that the movies are like a machine that generates empathy. It helps us understand the thoughts and fears of other people and cultures. Life Itself works in exactly this way… [I]t is a heartfelt exploration of a man who opened film up for the world. He may no longer be around, but what he left will stay for generations to come.” – The Macguffin

Immerse your child in a world of creativity and exploration at the Birmingham Museum of Art's (BMA) enriching Summer Art Camp series. At the heart of the BMA's mission is a commitment to providing quality art education opportunities that enhance the cultural and social well-being of our community. We're thrilled to announce the return of our summer art camps, designed to nurture the youth of the greater Birmingham area while fostering creativity, innovation, and imagination.

For rising 1st through 3rd graders, our first session from June 3rd to June 7th, 2024, focuses on "Costume Basics." Delve into the art of costuming, where campers will discover that it's more than just sewing stitches. Through hands-on activities and engaging lessons, participants will explore costume design fundamentals, learn basic sewing techniques, delve into the art of sketching, and master the creation of inspiration boards and styling. As a special treat, campers will draw inspiration from the captivating "Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume" exhibition, allowing them to connect their learning to real-world examples of costume design.

Throughout the week, campers will be guided by experienced instructors who are passionate about inspiring young minds and fostering a love for art. Our goal is to provide a supportive and encouraging environment where children can unleash their creativity and build confidence in their artistic abilities.

Don't miss this opportunity to spark your child's imagination and set them on a path of artistic discovery at the Birmingham Museum of Art's Summer Art Camp. Enroll today and watch as your child's creativity flourishes in a fun and inspiring setting.

WELCOME Is your child ready to trade stories, share a favorite book, or sing camp songs with a new friend? Do they like to be greeted with smiles and high-fives from staff and fellow campers for accomplishing something new? Does your child wish to fit in just for being who they are? At Y Summer Day Camp, we are here to make your kids feel welcome and to help them quickly realize this is a place where they belong and can be themselves – try new things – learn new skills – make new friends – and be a part of something great! A camp experience can be a powerful tool for personal growth. Knowing this, we strive to offer the highest quality camps with the most diverse opportunities. Great care goes into creating a fun and safe environment. We work hard to hire staff of the highest integrity and personal and spiritual maturity, and are enthusiastic about camp. All staff are thoroughly screened and background checked and receive training in first aid, CPR, safety and child abuse prevention, character building, and program implementation. You can depend on the Y to ensure camp is well supervised. Summer Camp seems far off, but it will be here before you know it. We hope you and your family will join us and help make it their best summer ever. Our camp day is built on an open programming model where campers will experience daily opportunities to select which games, crafts, or activities they participate in. Not only will they get to follow their own interests, but they’ll make their own path throughout the summer. There will be organized events and large group games outside the regular open programming periods. Each week, different fun opportunities will come to our camps. Being part of our summer day camp program goes beyond silly songs and games. Camp is about learning who you are, becoming what you want to be, developing new skills and healthy habits, reaching goals, and building relationships. Our summer day camp helps kids gain self-confidence, build character, and focus on the whole child in spirit, mind, and body.
