AEIVA presents Blue Moon Cocoon, an exhibition of recent video, sculpture, and photography by Texas-based artist, Virginia L. Montgomery (VLM). VLM’s surreal, synesthetic artworks unite elements of mysticism, physics, and neuroscience through an idiosyncratic visual vocabulary of recursive symbols and gestures, including imagery of luna moths the artist hand-raises in her studio. Orbits, circles, and spheres invoke scientific principles like the Coriolis Effect—the theory that matter swirls into circular formations—unifying the work around a sense of cosmic awe at the interconnectedness of matter and motion, from the microscopic to the planetary.

Virginia L. Montgomery (VLM) is an award-winning experimental filmmaker and multimedia artist working across video, performance, sound design, and sculpture. She received her MFA from Yale University and her BFA from The University of Texas at Austin. VLM has had solo presentations with The New Museum (NY), Times Square Arts (NY), Museum Folkwang (Germany), Wright Lab at Yale University (CT), The Lawndale Art Center (TX), False Flag (NY), and Hesse Flatow (NY). She has also exhibited in group exhibitions at institutions including SculptureCenter (NY), Ballroom Marfa (TX), Blanton Museum (TX), Contemporary Austin (TX), La Panacée-MoCo (France), The Hessel Museum at Bard College (NY), Banff Centre (Canada), Socrates Sculpture Park (NY), Kunsthal Charlottenborg (Denmark), and Tate Film at Tate Modern (UK), among others.

The parade takes place on Saturday, February 14, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. We'd love for you to join us by either attending or being in the parade by walking, riding, pushing, or pulling anything with wheels. Let your imagination run wild by decorating a float, car, truck, trailer, golf cart, or anything with wheels to showcase your company/organization name with banners or signs! Bringing a band or music to add to the festive atmosphere. Individuals and families are also welcome to participate in the parade!!

This parade is a yearly cherished tradition that Mom's Basement sponsors for the community, and your participation will help make it a success and bring smiles to the thousands that come out to watch.

Welcome to Emo Night Brooklyn, a late-night, DJ-driven dance party blasting the best emo and pop punk jams that raised us, ruined us, and somehow still define us. We’re taking over Saturn in Birmingham on February 14, 2026 for a night of screaming every word, moshing with strangers, and feeling absolutely everything.

Join us for Chamber Music @ AEIVA, a free evening where chamber music meets contemporary art. Dr. Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk curates this chamber music concert connected to the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts' exhibition Virginia L. Montgomery: Blue Moon Cocoon, in which surreal, synesthetic artworks unite elements of mysticism, physics, and neuroscience.

A reception begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the concert at 6:00 p.m. — arrive early to mingle, enjoy light catering, and explore the art that inspired the music before the performance.

This partnership with the Birmingham Zoo brings together science and art in an engaging series held every Tuesday in February. Inspired by artist Virginia Lee Montgomery’s art on view in AEIVA’s galleries, explore the intersection of art and science with hands-on activities that showcase how combining two disciplines can help us look at our surroundings in new ways.

Gardening supplies and materials can often be a steep investment. In this class you will learn how to grow a beautiful, thriving vegetable garden without breaking the bank! Alabama Cooperative Extension Agent Bethany O’Rear will introduce simple money-saving methods along with her tried-and-true tips for growing vegetables at home. Perfect for gardeners of all levels looking to grow more while spending less.

A partnership between UAB’s Arts in Medicine and the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts (AEIVA), the Museum Meditations series uses art to inspire reflection and mindfulness while encouraging participants to unwind and relieve stress.

Whether you’re a beginner or a skilled practitioner, join us for a free 45-minute guided meditation led by certified yoga therapist, Kim Richardson. Each session, inspired by the art of Virginia Lee Montgomery, will be held in the galleries at AEIVA immersed in the art on view. Due to space restrictions, classes are capped to a total of 20 participants per class. Advance registration is required.

Participants in these programs may be expected to sit on the floor or in a low chair or cushion for prolonged periods of time. Participants are encouraged to bring their own yoga mats or small floor cushion. Please note that water bottles are not permitted in the galleries.
