Wednesday is School Night at Faraway, and that means your weekly opportunity to jam! Jams are a great way to try out what your learning in class and your reps in. Jams are also a fun opportunity for students to get to play and meet other improv students in and around Birmingham. Performers will assigned to random teams, and those teams will each get an opportunity perform a short set on the Faraway stage. If you attended Study Hall, our weekly drop-in class, or are an active improv student anywhere, then the Jam is FREE!

The ArtPlay Musical Theatre Intensive offers an exciting opportunity for students ages 12-18 to dive into the world of musical theatre at a pre-professional level. This intensive program is designed for young artists who are passionate about theatre and want to build a strong foundation in musical theatre performance, technique, and industry knowledge. Over the course of eight dynamic workshops, students will explore key aspects of musical theatre, including vocal technique, acting, movement, and dance. They will also receive hands-on experience in creating and performing musical theatre material, all while working alongside professional industry artists. Through these interactive sessions, students will gain insight into the collaborative nature of theatre, build confidence in their craft, and learn the critical skills needed to pursue a career in the performing arts. The program concludes with an exciting showcase, where students will present what they’ve learned and demonstrate their growth as performers. This final presentation will be a celebration of their hard work and a chance for students to shine in front of family, friends, and community members. Artist Bio: Musical Theatre Intensive is being coordinated by industry professional Madi J. Rutledge. Born & raised in Birmingham, AL. Madi is thrilled to be returning to her roots after a three-year stint on the road. Madi most recently held the position of Assistant Company Manager for the Broadway First National Tour of Moulin Rouge! The Musical. Prior to that, Madi spent time on the road with the North American Tours of Fiddler on the Roof & The Book of Mormon! Madi received foundational training during her various management positions at Goodspeed Musicals, New York Stage and Film, & the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. Madi is a graduate of the University of Montevallo and holds a Bachelor of Science in Theatre with a focus in Arts Administration and Management. Since her return to Birmingham, Madi has rekindled her love for Disability Advocacy in and outside of artistic spaces. She currently serves as a full-time transition specialist at United Ability. Madi will be leading this effort and will be bringing in visiting local artists to share their various talents as well!

(All Ages) Join us for this special event celebrating talented young writers from around Alabama. The nine winners, three winners in each category (K-1, 2-3, 4-5) will receive awards and read their poems aloud. All are welcome! Join us for kids' poetry readings, refreshments, and fun activities with the Alabama Writers' Forum.

BIG WILLIES FANTASTIC FUNDRAISER!

(Ages 12-18) Sign up online beginning May 19 at homewoodpubliclibrary.org/sr. After signing up you will be assigned to one of four houses. For every three books or audiobooks you check out in-person or online, you earn a chance to enter the weekly drawing for a gift bag. You’ll get a reading list too, and each book read or listened to counts for one entry! Each entry is a point for your house.  The house with the most points wins the year. Entries will be kept throughout the Summer, so each one will have a chance to win the grand prize drawing on August 4.

(Ages 0-12) Summer is finally here, and we are ready for another spectacular summer reading program with you! Starting on May 19, come by the Homewood Public Library’s Children’s Department or visit our website at www.homewoodpubliclibrary.org/sr to sign up for summer reading. Once signed up, you’ll receive a calendar reading log to track each day you read or listen to an audiobook and a free book at the Friends Bookstore! Bring your log to our children’s desk, and for every 3 days you mark off, you will earn an entry for our monthly drawings. A handful of winners are going to be picked on July 1 and August 4.

Join us as Sid Burgess presents story time for adults, which features classic short stories that captivate as well as entertain. The stories, written by notable authors, are read aloud. No registration is required, so drop by for some nostalgic fun.
