[more+]The exhibit will open at BCRI and the Public Library Central Branch on September 16th and run through December 2nd.
Men of Change: Power. Triumph. Truth. profiles the revolutionary men—including Muhammad Ali, James Baldwin, Ta-Nehisi Coates, W.E.B Du Bois, and Kendrick Lamar—whose journeys have altered the history and culture of the country. The achievements of the men are woven within the legacy and traditions of the African-American journey—achievements of excellence in spite of society’s barriers.
Through literary and historic quotes, poetry, original works of art, dramatic photographs, and a dynamic space that encourages self-reflection, this innovative exhibition weaves together the historical and the contemporary to illuminate the importance of these men within the context of rich community traditions. It invites visitors to consider predominant narratives and engage in the authentic stories of history, politics, art, culture, and activism. Twenty-five contemporary artists were invited to reflect and celebrate the significance of these ground-breaking individuals through their own creative vision. These works of art serve as counterpoint to the sumptuously backlit photographs and inspiring quotes, and together honor the truth of the African American experience in history and today.
While these men made their mark in a variety of disciplines—politics, sports, science, entertainment, business, religion, and more—all understood the value of asserting their own agency by owning their own stories.
Men of Change was developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and made possible through the generous support of the Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services.

For his 2023 AEIVA exhibit, titled The Undeniable Blackness Between Us, Dixon will explore his cultural duality through the lens of his childhood, familial relationships, and his search for a father he’s never known.
Michael Dixon lives in Albion, Michigan and is a full professor of art at Albion College. He received his MFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Dixon is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, Joan Mitchell Foundation Emergency Grant, Puffin Foundation Grant, and the Blanchard Fellowship. [more+]Scrappy and interpretive, Jacqueline Surdell hand-manipulates dock cord — weaving and knotting the line into naturalistic, sculptural installations that are antagonistically positioned between the human body and sculpture. The industrial material and physically demanding process playfully orbit techniques, colors and forms associated with domesticity. The works trace the artist’s family history and private life while fostering discussion around labor, gender, and sexuality.
Surdell’s 2023 AEIVA exhibit, titled Adoration Garden, will explore memory and time as material — transforming AEIVA’s Gallery One into a space of play, contemplation, power, drive and creation.

Stay Awake is Birmingham Children’s Theatre’s next installment of Theatre for Very Young Audiences (TVYA), where children ages 0 – 5 are able to explore the world around them through the magic of live theatre. Through repetition, rhyme, song, and a lot of audience interaction, this show invites young kids to not just watch but experience creative storytelling. This show is great for kinesthetic learners who use movement, testing, trial and error in a non-traditional learning to retain and recall information. The space is fully interactive, and the kids have agency in the space to play, learn, and participate in the story at their own pace.

[more+]How does one relocate the Unique?
The origins of this project are located at an Artist Residency done by group members Ian Breidenbach, Caroline Turner-Anderson, and Ian Anderson (Solar Noon Collective) in June 2023 at 33OfficinaCreativa in Toffia, Italy; housed in a 13th century deconsecrated church complex. The purpose of the residency was the translation of that sacred/secular space into a digital gallery to act as the setting for a Pavilion for the Wrong Biennale, a digital art fair which is decentralized by its being hosted solely on the internet. This digital recreation of the sacred/secular space of the residency allowed us to utilize the unique architecture of the church, while also populating it with works from artists around the world. The curation of the Pavilion was focused on its para-real existence: as a non-space situated somewhere between physical and digital. The translation from material to immaterial allowed for a non-place to imagine impossibilities, to explore the unexplored and allow the work to remain unsullied by the dominant forces of the (art) world. This project became known as UID (Unique Identifier::Utopian Inspirational Daemon)
Can you relocate through the para-real?
The church became an abstracted space when digitized, its elements re-presented to point to the original forms. However, what we find in the para-real space is a represented symbolic, signifying both to the representation and the interpretation, but also to the blindingly clear impossibility of itself. In the Pavilion, the viewer can never access the level of inseparability provided by the digitality of the container and the work it contains; its feeling of oneness. For this current translation of the exhibition here within the Vinegar gallery space, we can only manifest these “Utopian Insprations” in physical form by separating the singularity of the Pavilion back into its parts, relocating them as temporary holders of space.
The UMD problematizes the ability of the UID to escape its para-real boundaries. Can we legitimately represent the potential for Utopia created in the para-real? Or are we only creating signs which point through it?

WeeFolks Show perfect for children of ages 4-8 years old. In the Wee Folks Theatre pre-K and elementary audiences are introduced to structured theatrical performances. Shows in this space often come from the pages of favorite storybooks and classic fairy tales updated for today’s children.
Usually (though not always) musical and/or interactive, audiences in Wee Folks are encouraged to react audibly and help our main characters on their story journey. Audiences sit on carpeted risers in this room created for children to enjoy theatre in a space designed for them. And with our Sensory Room right next door, kids who need a break have an easy place to reset mid-show.

Jacqueline Surdell is from Chicago, IL. The city’s history of industry, labor and Midwest grit plays a significant role in Surdell’s work. She received a BA from Occidental College in Los Angeles and her MFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her recent solo and group exhibitions include Devening Projects, Chicago; Library Street Collective, Detroit; Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago; Bedford Gallery, San Francisco and international shows in Japan, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

Exhibition opening reception:

On Saturday, Sept 30, we will have multiple organizations and experts here to educate and answer your questions about gardening, specifically with native plants and the best way to landscape responsibly for the least damaging impact on the ecosystem. Everyone in the area loves the Cahaba River, and we welcome the Cahaba Riverkeeper organization to discuss how to best manage our impact on the river and all of its diverse species.
Recreative Natives will be here with Alabama native plants, as well as several Master Gardeners, gardening expert Sandra Reaves with Josie Gladys Gardens, and many more. Our panel-style discussion will begin at noon. Check back for updates on participant schedules for presentations/demos followed by Q&A. Be sure to bring your questions and something to take notes. You won't want to miss this opportunity to learn!
It may be fall, but we expect this event to continue to grow like a spring weed!
